Share Food’, is a ceramic tableware series by Bilge Nur Saltik. Upon traveling, Nur became aware that food culture varies between cultures. Sharing food may not be encouraged in every country, in fact, it is may be considered inappropriate behavior at a dinner party. In her home city of Istanbul, sharing food is an expression of generosity and pleasure. As a playful response to the dining etiquette of the twenty-first century, Nur developed a series of ceramic dishes that would facilitate the sharing of food, therefore inspiring communication at the table.
‘My aim is to encourage people to share their food. Open your plate to others to initiate conversation. I believe sharing will encourage communication between people.’ The angled bottom of each plate and cup allows the vessels to rotate and adjust their position, thereby providing access to multiple diners and encouraging people to share food. Each object has a painted base that creates a soft glow when placed on light-coloured surfaces. The glow is to underline the angle, It is to indicate the direction of sharing and to create curiosity.
It is a nice gesture to tip the plate and offer your food to someone. Opening your plate to someone is kind, surprising and playful.

Studio Bilge Nur Saltik established on 2013 after Nur completed her master degree in Royal College of Art in Product Design under Tord Boontje. Her approach to design merges culture in a contemporary way. She focuses on stories behind the objects and human behavior as a result of it. Working with traditional craftsmen, she introduces them to new materials, thus utilizing their knowledge and techniques while originating a fabrication of products combining the old with the new. Nur is particularly interested in the human behavior and narratives, which result from the objects she designs.
